B

  • Browser : A browser is an application to view the internet.  Some common browsers are: Internet Explorer, Netscape, Maxthon, andFirefox

 

C

  • Cookie : A cookie is a file that is written to your computer when you access certain websites to contain information.  Most often they are used on retail websites that contain a shopping cart.  This is so it can remember the items you have selected to buy. 

  • CSS : Also referred to as Cascading Style Sheets, are used with HTML and XHTML to define the layout of a webpage.

  • DNS : Domain Name Service allows you to access a website's internet address by typing in the correct name (like www.ccworxllc.com )

  • Download : To download means to copy a file from another computer, or a remote location.  The opposite would be to upload a file.

  • Drive : A drive is a common term referring to many different types of devices.  Some of these devices can be physical, like a Hard Disk Drive, Floppy Drive or a DVD/CD-ROM.  Each device is assigned a drive letter than ranges from A - Z.  The C: Drive is typically where the operating system is installed, and the A - B drives are reserved for Floppy Disks.  D - E is normally for CD-Rom / CD-RW / DVD-ROM / DVD-RW.  A Hard Disk Drive, or a Floppy Drive have the ability to have information stored on them, while CD-ROM, or DVD-ROM do not.  To store information on a CD or DVD you will need a CD-RW, or a DVD-RW.

  • Driver : A driver works with your operating system (like Windows) to control a device in your system (keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, etc.)

  • FTP : (File Transfer Protocol) is a means to copy files across the internet.

  • GUI : (Graphical User Interface) is simply a graphical way to interact with a program,  It's what you're looking at when you run a program.

  • Memory : The most common type of computer memory is RAM (Random Access Memory).  It stores information for a short period of time, so long as it is needed.  Other types of memory are ROM, or Flash.

  • Modem : A modem is a device that connects a computer to a network, or another computer via a telephone line.  The term modem means to modulate / demodulate, which is to convert digital data back and forth over an analog phone line.  Internet providers that require modems are referred to as "Dial-Up" (AOL)

  • Monitor : The screen you view while using a computer is called a monitor.  There are several types of monitors available (CRT, LCD, or Plasma).

  • Network : A network is simply a group of computers connected and working together.  There are many types of networks, but the most common are LAN (Local Area Network), WAN (Wide Area Network), and WiFi (Wireless Network).

  • Partition : Sometimes it is necessary to split a Hard Disc Drive (logically) into several partitions.   For example: If you wanted to divide a 200GB hard Disk Drive into two equal sections, you would have two partitions of 100GB.  You can then set logical drive letters to those partitions.

  • Ping : Ping is a protocol used to see if another computer is active on the network.  If the computer recognizes the protocol it will report back it's status. 

  • Processor : Also known as the CPU (Central Processing Unit).  The CPU is the part of the computer that handles all the data and runs the programs.

  • Protocol : A protocol is a means for two computers to communicate.

R

  • RAM : (Random Access Memory) is the most common and fastest type of memory.  It's only short-term memory so if there is a power failure, or the computer is restarted, the RAM is cleared.

  • ROM : (Read-Only Memory) is similar to RAM but does not lose it's memory when power is lost.  ROM however can not be written to or changed.

  • Server : A server is a computer that provides services to all computers on a network

  • Spam : Spam is basically a digital version of Junk Mail you get in email.  No one wants it, or asks for it.  Most email providers have Spam Blockers available.

  • Upload : To upload a file means to copy it to a remote computer, or location.  The opposite is to download.
